1. Dike (Dyke) across Gulf of Cambay. Construction of a dike across Gulf of Kambay in the mouth of Rivers Narmada & Tapti, at a suitable location between Surat and Taloja in Bhavnagar district is worth consideration by State and Central Governments It is known that the Gulf of Cambay is shallow and hence construction of dike shall be feasible. The Local/Central government can consider giving this project on Built and Operate basis to some private agency. Netherland government can be approached for technology support.
1.1. Drinking water and Irrigation. Implementation of the project can slowly convert the vast gulf into a very big sweet water reservoir by pushing out the sea water with the water discharge from Narmada and Tapti rivers. With distributor canals, vast area of Gujarat can be irrigated. Wind mills with water screws can be used to get required head along the canals for lift irrigation enabling water flow to highlands. 1.2.
Quicker means of transport: Roads and rails over the dike will drastically reduce the distance between North Western industrial belts of Gujarat with Maharashtra and other parts of the country.
1.3. Usage of dike as a port: The sea end of the dike can be converted into a major port.
1.4. Employment potential: In addition to the usefulness of the project, such project has huge employment potential during the project as we as for the operation. 1
5. Real estate potential: Land reclaimed at the sides of Gulf can be developed into valuable real estates. Opinions and suggestions of members who have knowledge about the Gulf of Kambay area, and behavior of Narmada and Tapti rivers and other issues are welcome. Please forward to friends who have contacts with the planning authorities. Gujarat / Indian Government can take advice of Netherlands to study the feasibility of the project and do some survey and research about the possibility of such projects in the river mouths in West Bengal and other parts of the country.
2. Proposal to construct dike across Gulf of Kutch between Jamnagar and Mandvi. Construction of a dike across Gulf of Kutch at a suitable location between Jamnagar and Mandvi can provide continuity of road and rail connectivity to hinder lands of Gujarat.
2.1. Generation of Electricity using sea tides in the Kutch area. It is learnt that Gulf of Kutch use to experience tides as high as 10 to 15 meters with certain seasonal variations. e dike constructed across Gulf can be used to generate electricity from sea tide waves. The dike shall be constructed in such a way to provide large number of water turbines in tunnels across the length of the dike. 2.2 The gulf is about 150 Km long and 54 Km wide. With mean usage of a 5 meter tide level difference, the over all productive quantity of water flow will be over 4 million metric cubic meter of water. With the possibility of hundreds of turbines located along the length of the dike, huge quantity of electric power can be generated with the turbines operational with water flowing in to the captive area during high tide and water flowing out to the sea during the low tide. 2.3. Planning and designing of tunnels and turbines and its locations and technology so as to handle full water flow to generate maximum energy within the productive duration etc. are big technology challenges to be met. Controlling of the opening and shutting of the tunnel gates to ensure required head for lengthy productive duration etc. are subjects of detail study. There can be exclusive water gates on the both ends of dike to enable fishing boats and other water transport vessels to move between captive area and sea.
2.2. Energy from Wind Machines. In addition, large number of Wind power Machines can be installed over the dikes across Gulf of Kuch and the one proposed across Gulf of Cambay to supplement production of energy from tidal waves during the tidal direction change period. There are many such opportunities for of-shore power generation from wind power and solar power across the country.
3. Road and Railways: Highways and rails can be constructed over the dike surface to provide road and rail traffic between Jamnagar side and Kutch side. This linked with the proposed dike across Gulf of Cambay will drastically bring down the travel time between Kandla and Kutch area to Jamnagar industrial best and then towards the south Gujarat and Maharashtra regions. This can form a North Western Highway right from the boarder that will be very vital for the defense purpose also. 4. Green technology: These dikes can totally change the topology and ecology of the region. The input energy is cost free and also production method is fully pollution free green technology these will have only positive impact on the ecology of the area. 5. The sale of electricity, the road and rail toll, revenue from the ports, and from large area of land reclaimed on both sides, can generate enough revenue to cover the project cost and for rehabilitation of families affected etc., and more.
